About us

The brand Kolbenschmidt stands for high-quality system components and for a reliable, sustainable partnership with manufacturers of motors of all kinds.

Whether small bore or large bore pistons, plain bearings, or engine blocks – Kolbenschmidt develops, manufactures, and delivers customer-specific solutions for internal combustion engines used in automobiles, commercial diesel applications, ships, and stationary engines. As one of the world’s leading companies in this segment, we enjoy the confidence of many well-known and globally active manufacturers with whom we jointly develop and manufacture the engines of tomorrow. In addition to our outstanding quality, our customers especially appreciate our problem-solving competence and our service. For there is one thing our partners can depend on: we consistently apply all our expertise and our comprehensive know-how to continuously improve our materials, methods, and products.

Products and services

With pistons with diameters of between 150 and 640 mm for areas of application requiring steel and aluminum, Kolbenschmidt is one of the world’s leading manufacturers. Hardly any other company offers that kind of variety in size. The product range is also convincing: one-piece aluminum pistons, spheroidal graphite monoblock, and constructed pistons with steel upper parts and aluminum, spheroidal graphite iron, and steel lower parts, as well as new developments in the area of steel pistons – Kolbenschmidt has it all. For diesel engines in ships, simplicity of servicing is especially important. That is why Kolbenschmidt develops solutions for customer specific requirements that are simple to service and easy to replace on the high seas. In order to satisfy all customer requirements optimally, the production sites for our large bore pistons are located in the important markets in Europe, the USA, and China.
NCI Monobloc Piston

NCI Monobloc Piston

High strength and low thermal expansion of the material used allow the manufacturing of thin-wall pistons and the introduction of low running clearances. Monobloc pistons in diameters from 170 to 350 mm diameters represent an economically attractive alternative to composite pistons in account of their simple design (no connecting elements, integrated cooling spaces) and their proven reliability with heavy fuel operation.

Steel-Aluminum Piston

Steel-Aluminum Piston

One piece aluminum pistons made of KS 1275 eutectic AlSi alloy, are employed in diameters ranging from 160 to approximately 450 mm. Pistons with diameters exceeding 200 mm are manufactured employing directionally chilled fine grain castings, with cast-in ring carriers of austenitic grey iron and cooling coils.

Articulated Piston

Articulated Piston

The KS Kolbenschmidt design for an articulated large bore piston is a three piece articulated piston or a composite articulated piston. The forged steel crown is bolted together with a cast pin boss. The skirt is made out of forged aluminum and it is connected to the pin boss by the piston pin. The advantages of this design are basically the low weight by achieving high performance data and it is possible to achieve a relatively low compression height.
